Music Video Case Study

This music video highlights some of the main conventions seen in R&B or Pop music videos, like violence, drugs and relationships. But most of these things are presented subtly or in unusual ways.

It starts with a close up of Miley, so her new image is promoted straight away. We can deduct from the big yellow writing and close up that the purpose of this music video is to promote the artists new look.

The next shot is dark and contrasts to the white, 'serene' mise-en-scene of Miley's scene. This draws the audience more to the artist and seeing as the dark scene is ambiguous, it emphasizes the promotion of Miley.

There are lots of medium shots of Miley in provocative poses. Also the contrast of the white and her tattoos and makeup show her as rebellious, so conforms to the typical R&B conventions of a 'bad girl'.

The scene with the 'cutting' off fingers shows violence. This whole video is very relatable to the younger generation of how they supposedly are. The pink liquid mimicking blood is supposed to be humorous, perhaps to suggest how youths don't take things seriously and how it's all about fun.

The censored sign physically displays how Miley's new image is explicit. It also relates to the rebellious side again and the contrast of the black costume and the blue of the water shows edginess.

The close up of Miley allows her to connect with the audience directly and the red lipstick emphasizes her new lusty look. Also, the jewellery and tattoos are typical in R&B videos.
